The Map is Not the Territory

Many bad decisions aren't caused by bad thinking. They're caused by confidently navigating with an outdated map.

Imagine using a city map from 1998.

The roads have changed.

Buildings have disappeared.

Entire neighbourhoods have evolved.

The map isn't lying.

It's simply outdated.

The interesting part is this...

Many of us make decisions using maps that are even older.

"People can't be trusted."

"I'm not good enough."

"Success always requires suffering."

"They probably won't understand me."

Perhaps those beliefs were once reasonable.

Perhaps they even protected us.

But protection and accuracy aren't always the same thing.

Before questioning the world...

Occasionally question the map.

Because reality rarely causes as many problems as our interpretation of it.

Good decisions don't always require better intelligence.

Sometimes they simply require a better map.
