Labels usually arrive late.
You don't receive a receipt before buying something.
You receive it afterwards.
That would be a very confusing shopping experience otherwise.
Oddly enough...
Many of us expect identity to work the opposite way.
"I'll call myself a writer, then I'll write."
"I'll become confident once I believe I am."
"Maybe if I say I'm disciplined often enough, reality will eventually agree."
Reality has always seemed remarkably unimpressed by introductions.
It keeps looking for evidence.
Think about the people you know.
The reliable one.
The generous one.
The calm one.
Very few of them announced it first.
They simply repeated something long enough for everyone else to stop arguing.
The label arrived later.
Almost like a receipt.
Perhaps that's why borrowed identities feel uncomfortable.
Not because they're impossible.
Because they're unpaid for.
There's no shame in that.
Every identity begins on credit.
The mistake is expecting the receipt before making the purchase.
Maybe identity isn't something you choose.
Maybe it's something your repeated Tuesdays quietly choose for you.
