Your Attention Has Already Been Scheduled
Good morning.
Here's a slightly uncomfortable thought.
Before you woke up today...
Someone was already planning your attention.
Not your calendar.
Your attention.
Hundreds of engineers.
Designers.
Psychologists.
Algorithms.
Recommendation engines.
Notification systems.
All quietly asking the same question:
'How do we get just one more minute?'
And to be fair...
They're very good at their jobs.
The interesting question isn't why they're trying.
It's why we're surprised when it works.
Most of us have calendars.
Very few of us have an attention plan.
So the world kindly creates one for us.
One notification.
One headline.
One trending topic.
One 'quick look'.
Somewhere around forty-seven tabs later, we vaguely remember that we originally opened the browser to check tomorrow's weather.
Apparently we've now become experts in medieval bread-making.
Life moves quickly.
Attention drifts quietly.
The goal isn't to reject technology.
Technology is an extraordinary tool.
The goal is to stop outsourcing our awareness.
Because every time we unconsciously surrender our attention, we're quietly handing someone else the steering wheel of our day.
And eventually...
Enough days become a life.
So here's a tiny experiment.
Before opening anything today, ask one simple question:
'Did I choose this... or did it choose me?'
That one question won't eliminate distraction.
But it might restore authorship.
And that's usually where meaningful change begins.
Until next time...
Choose carefully.
Because your attention is writing a biography that your memory will later call your life.
