The Habit You Didn't Know You Had

The most influential habits are rarely the ones we notice. They're the ones we defend with, 'That's just how I am.'

Hello,

When someone says the word habit,

most of us think about exercise.

Reading.

Healthy eating.

Or perhaps that biscuit we continue calling 'just one.'

But here's something worth noticing.

Some of our strongest habits don't involve our hands.

They involve our thinking.

Complaining can become a habit.

Interrupting can become a habit.

Apologising for existing can become a habit.

Checking your phone whenever life becomes slightly quiet can become a habit.

So can expecting the worst.

So can doubting yourself.

They're difficult to notice because they don't feel like decisions anymore.

They feel like personality.

And that's exactly what habits do best.

They wear the same outfit often enough that we mistake them for identity.

Here's a small experiment.

Tomorrow, don't try changing anything.

Just observe yourself.

Notice the sentences you repeat.

The excuses you automatically produce.

The moments when your hand reaches for your phone before your mind has even joined the conversation.

You may discover that you're running on far more autopilot than you realised.

Don't be discouraged.

That's not failure.

That's awareness.

And awareness has an interesting habit of changing behaviour all by itself.

Perhaps the goal isn't to become someone completely different.

Perhaps it's simply to become slightly more awake while being yourself.

Because the habits you notice...

are the habits you can eventually redesign.

The ones you never notice quietly become your lifestyle.

Until next time...

Stay curious.

Especially about yourself.
